On the Further Mechanization of the Human Body (Part I)

Matt Maday

I’m burnt out. I’m broken. I’m worn out. I shut down.

These are colloquialisms, figurative language that we use because these phrasings refer to a “commonsense” understanding of body as computer. This is supposed to be the “cognitive” model of psychology, when “cognitive” is taken on its own instead of combined with “cognitive-behavioral.” This is because, apparently, “behaviorism” when taken as the sole theoretical approach to psychology, reminds us of our biology, of our taxonomic classification that we’ve set for ourselves as “animals.”

Animals are trained. Computers are programmed. Humans apparently can think for themselves. So why do we think mechanistic metaphors are the best ways to describe ourselves and our own thinking?
